What Is the Difference Between Dental Implants and Dental Bridges

Both dental implants and dental bridges are procedures that replace a missing tooth.

But, what's the difference between them, and which type of restorative dental treatment should you choose?

What Is a Dental Implant Surgery

With an implant, the root of a damaged or missing tooth will be replaced with a metal post. The implant will look and function just like a regular tooth, blending seamlessly with the rest of your smile.

This option is ideal when dentures or dental bridges either don’t fit well or the tooth’s structure isn’t strong enough to support them. .

However, getting dental implants involves a lengthy and complex process that can take up to six months. Moreover, if the jaw bone has been weakened by bone loss, then you may also need surgery in order to restore its integrity before the actual implant can be placed.

What Is a Dental Bridge

A dental bridge, as the name suggests, closes the gap created by missing teeth. A bridge is made out of crowns that cover the gap. These crowns are connected to an anchored tooth, meaning a natural tooth that has no issues and can support the bridge.

Differences Between Dental Implants and Bridges

While both procedures can help restore your smile and maintain your oral health, several differences set them apart. Depending on your oral health and personal preferences, your dentist will recommend the option that suits you best by considering several factors.

  1. Durability: Bridges last 10 years on average, while implants can last a lifetime if they are properly taken care of.
  2. Length of Treatment: Bridges are done in a couple of weeks after the initial procedures, while implants take several months, depending on the healing process.
  3. Bone Preservation: Suffering from bone loss can be caused by both missing teeth and bridges. Implants are the only treatment that can prevent jawbone deterioration as it stimulates the jaw just like a natural tooth would.
  4. Stability: Dental bridges are not a permanent solution and do not provide complete stability. On the other hand, implants can last a lifetime with the proper care and provide a stable base for your dental restoration.
  5. Cost: Bridges are less expensive than implants. The price can vary depending on the material, type, extent of the procedure, etc.
  6. Health: Implants require surgery, and the healing process can be affected by certain health conditions, such as diabetes.
  7. Hygiene: Oral hygiene is very important overall, but dental bridges do require more thorough care than dental implants if you want to ensure lasting benefits.
