What Are Clear Aligners?

Understanding the Basics

SimplyClear® aligners are a modern orthodontic solution that uses a series of custom-made, removable trays to gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment. Each set is worn for about two weeks before progressing to the next, slowly guiding your smile into its ideal position. Why Choose Aligner Treatment?

The Benefits of Clear Aligners

Clear aligner trays are virtually undetectable when worn and have no impact on your ability to speak clearly, making them a popular choice among teens and adults alike. Treatment is often faster than traditional braces for mild to moderate cases, and the smooth plastic construction means no sharp metal edges to irritate your cheeks or gums.

One of the standout advantages of clear aligners is the freedom they provide. Because the trays are removable, you can eat and drink whatever you like with no restrictions. Brushing and flossing remain completely unchanged — you simply take the trays out to maintain your usual oral hygiene routine. You can also remove them temporarily for sports, performances, or special occasions, giving you flexibility that traditional braces simply cannot offer.

What to Expect

The Clear Aligner Treatment Process
Initial Consultation

To begin the process, you’ll need to see Dr. Morren for a comprehensive consultation to evaluate your teeth, bite, and overall oral health. Dr. Morren will determine whether you are a strong candidate for treatment and walk you through your options at our Austin office.

First Sets of Aligners

If you're approved for treatment, Dr. Morren will take precise digital scans of your teeth to design a fully customized treatment plan. Your first sets of trays will be fabricated and ready for pickup at our office, typically within a few weeks.

Wearing Your Aligners

Each set of aligners is typically worn for 20-22 hours or longer per day. They should be removed only to eat and drink, and to brush and floss. Each set is worn for about 2 weeks. You will need to come back into our office periodically for a quick oral exam and to get your next few sets of aligners.

Treatment Completion

You will continue progressing through each set of trays until your teeth have reached their final position. At your last appointment, Dr. Morren will confirm your results and fit you with a retainer to keep your new smile in place — marking the successful completion of your treatment.

Why Choose SimplyClear® Aligners Over Braces?

Transparent Treatment - The most obvious advantage of clear aligner therapy is discretion. The smooth, clear trays fit snugly over your teeth and are nearly invisible in everyday settings — no brackets, no wires, and no unwanted attention. Even the small attachments used to guide tooth movement are matched to your natural tooth shade.

More Hygienic - Metal braces create tight spaces that are notoriously difficult to clean, which often leads to plaque buildup, white spots, and cavities by the end of treatment. Because your trays are fully removable, you can brush and floss exactly as you normally would — making it significantly easier to maintain a healthy mouth throughout the entire course of treatment.

Restriction-Free Diet - Traditional braces come with a long list of foods to avoid — anything sticky, hard, or chewy can damage wires and brackets. With removable aligner trays, there are no food restrictions whatsoever. Simply take the trays out before eating, enjoy your meal, brush your teeth, and put them back in. It's that straightforward.

Comfortability - The constant tension of metal wires can cause persistent soreness, especially after adjustment appointments. Aligner trays apply gentle, controlled pressure to shift teeth gradually, resulting in a far more comfortable experience overall. There are no sharp components to cut the inside of your mouth or require emergency visits for broken hardware.

Digital Planning - Your entire treatment is mapped out digitally from start to finish before a single tray is made. Using 3D scans, x-rays, and photographs, Dr. Morren can show you a projected preview of your final results before you commit — so you know exactly what to expect from day one.

Why Would I Need Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are most effective at correcting mild to moderate orthodontic problems such as:

  • Overcrowding
  • Gaps
  • Crooked teeth
  • Bite problems

If any of these issues are affecting your smile or bite, clear aligner therapy may be an excellent solution. For cases involving more complex movements, Dr. Morren can also incorporate small tooth-colored attachments bonded to your teeth to help the trays apply more precise, targeted force where it's needed most.

What Questions Should I Ask My Dentist About Clear Aligners?

Coming to your consultation prepared can help you make a more confident decision. Here are a few questions worth discussing with your dentist:

How Much Do Clear Aligners Cost?

The cost of clear aligner treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case and the length of treatment needed. Some dental insurance plans provide partial or full coverage, particularly when treatment addresses a functional concern. At Austin Dental Company, we also offer flexible financing through Cherry to help make care accessible for every budget.

What Can Clear Aligners Treat?

Clear aligners can address a wide range of alignment concerns, including crowding, gaps, and many bite issues. That said, they work best for cases that don't require extreme tooth movement or complex jaw repositioning. Patients with more severe malocclusions may achieve better results with traditional braces — your dentist will give you an honest recommendation based on your specific needs.

Is There Anything I Can’t Do While Wearing My Aligners?

Clear aligner treatment requires consistent compliance to be effective. Trays must be worn at least 22 hours per day and should only be removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, and your oral hygiene routine. Smoking while wearing your trays is strongly discouraged, as it can stain the plastic and compromise your results.

What Happens When I’m Done My Treatment?

Finishing your active treatment is a major milestone, but maintaining your results requires ongoing effort. Once treatment is complete, you will transition into a retainer worn nightly. Without consistent retainer use, teeth can gradually drift back toward their original position over time.

How Do I Take Care of My Aligners?

First, let’s start with what you shouldn’t do. Don’t smoke, eat, drink hot liquids, or consume flavored drinks with your aligners in. We recommend abstaining from smoking during your treatment altogether. These behaviors increase your risk of staining your aligners and getting cavities.

Hot water can morph your aligners. You should clean your aligners with denture cleaner and a soft-bristle toothbrush twice a day, preferably in the morning and at night. Rinse your aligners under cold water when taking them out and put them back in their storage case so you don’t lose or break them.

Always remove your trays before eating or drinking anything other than water, and brush your teeth before placing them back in. Rinse your trays with cool water every time you take them out, and soak them in a denture cleaner or dedicated aligner cleaning solution for at least 15 minutes each day. Avoid hot water entirely, as it can warp the plastic and compromise the fit.
